Espiritu partnered with two VA nurses and Professor Bob Hitchcock to help bring a promising infection-prevention concept from early sketches and a rough prototype to a fully realized medical device.
The team came to Espiritu with frontline clinical insight and an important problem to solve: reducing infection risk associated with IV tubing.
Working closely with the inventors, Espiritu led the design and engineering of the product that became known as the Dual Cap, a solution created to improve safety, usability, and real-world adoption in demanding hospital environments.
Through Espiritu’s product development process, the Dual Cap evolved from an early idea into a commercially successful medical device now used in thousands of hospitals.
The product’s impact extended far beyond engineering execution; it became a meaningful innovation in infection prevention and a strong example of how thoughtful design can improve patient care at scale.
The success of the Dual Cap ultimately led to its acquisition by Merit Medical for more than $40 million, demonstrating both the clinical value of the solution and the power of Espiritu’s ability to help transform early-stage concepts into high-value healthcare products.
